Rare view of Boston in the early part of the 19th century.
Hand coloured copperplate engraving by Spirito Batelli from Giulio Ferrario's “Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World” published in Florence in 1837.
The view is from Castle William later known as Fort Independence.
The print is probably derived from the engraving "A View of the City of Boston, the Capital of New England in North America" "drawn on the spot by his Excellency Governor [Thomas] Pownal[l]; painted by Mr. Pugh and engraved by P.C. Canot" which appeared in the "Scenographia americana" published in London in 1768.
In an excellent condition. Hand coloured copperplate engraving on thick paper. Narrow top margin. Dark impression. Sheet size - 23.5cm x 15cm.
